The Elgin/St. Thomas Youth Employment Counselling Centre have been successful in securing funding to engage youth in participating in creating an indoor mural for the Talbot Teen Centre and a travelling gallery.
Youth Mural Project:
The Elgin/St. Thomas Youth Employment Counselling Centre with an artist/mentor mural painter will engage approximately 10 – 15 youth volunteers from the Elgin area in the concept, design, and painting of a large scale interior mural for the Talbot Teen Centre that will be aesthetically interesting and energizing for the youth, volunteers, and staff who utilize the centre.
Travelling Youth Art Exhibit:
The Elgin/St. Thomas Youth Employment Counselling Centre with mentoring and guidance from a local artist will engage 3 youth in the painting of 3 canvases. These “works of art” will then go on a rotational public display within the Employment Services Elgin satellite offices Elgin wide.
The desired outcome of these projects are to:
- Help build self esteem and confidence as youth see their art on public display and in the case of the mural – as a permanent part of their centre
- Attract more youth into the Talbot Teen Centre with a “4 Youth by Youth” project
- Foster a sense of ownership and respect for the Talbot Teen Centre as the youth gain an appreciation for the environment which they helped create
- Give youth the opportunity to try out new things and explore their artistic side in a safe non-judgemental environment
- Offer a fun, safe activity where youth can find satisfaction, fulfillment and joy in their unique artistic expression
