The Elgin/St. Thomas Youth Employment Counselling Centre was successful in securing funding to provide a variety of different mediums on substance abuse prevention and awareness to reach as many youth and members of the community as possible.
Goals:
- The website will:
- provide an information section for youth on substance abuse awareness and prevention.
- provide links to community agencies/organizations that deal with these issues.
- The youth forums will:
- provide awareness of the hazards of substance abuse.
- The parent forum will:
- provide information to parents on substance abuse, how to recognize the signs, how to talk to their children about substance abuse, and how to get help.
The substance abuse awareness display will:
- be displayed permanently at the TTC but also portable for school presentations, mall displays, etc.
- provide information to youth and the community at large on the hazards of substance abuse and information on how to get help.
The presentations will:
- be delivered in high schools and senior elementary schools.
- heighten awareness about the hazards of using drugs.
- provide information on addictions
- introduce secondary issues related to involvement with drugs e.g. crime, conflict at school, difficulty in holding jobs or volunteer placements
- provide information as to what agencies can be contacted for additional information and support
